Letter from Kath O’Dwyer, Chief Executive, St Helens Council
Wednesday 25th March 2020
I write to you to provide some clarity and guidance about the provision of school places for the children of key workers during the Covid 19 pandemic.
As you will be aware, schools have closed to the vast majority of pupils but are continuing to provide a school place to all children of key workers and vulnerable pupils if required.
School places are available for all key worker children, if needed, but a number of schools are struggling to provide sufficient teachers and support for those pupils who have been identified as eligible. We need to make sure that this provision can continue and as such we are making arrangements from next week to maintain the number of school places available but reduce the number of schools that they are available within. This is to allow the best possible use of the resources that we have. Your Head Teacher will be in contact with you about this and ensure you have the information you need.
In line with Government guidance, we are asking all key workers to only use this provision if there is no other alternative to support your continued attendance at work. If you have arrangements that can keep your children away from school, we would want you to utilise these. Only when you have no alternative as a key worker should you use the provision of a school place.
I would be grateful if you could confirm your requirements with your Child’s school directly. We recognise your needs may change and we will seek to ensure we can accommodate this.
I want to express my sincere appreciation for your commitment to continue to provide essential care and support to the people of our Borough. We would not be able to protect, support and care for the residents of this Borough without you.
