PSHE
Curriculum Intent
At St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the "whole child" intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. PSHE is taught across the school from Reception to Year 6 on a weekly basis, and as a school we follow the Pol-Ed programme, supported by PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) for social and emotional learning, and Journey in Love for Relationships and Sex Education. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever-changing society, we can provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values: Compassion, Respect, Courage and Humility.
Implementation
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision, which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.
Pol-Ed directs our aim of developing the "whole child" through four strands, taught every year group from Reception to Year 6 and building in depth as children move through the school:
- Relationships
- Keeping Safe
- Understanding the Law
- Wellbeing
Alongside Pol-Ed, every class takes part in a weekly PATHS session, developing children's emotional understanding, self-control, social problem-solving and peer relationships. Relationships and Sex Education is delivered through Journey in Love, our Archdiocesan-recommended resource, with one unit per year group building on the themes of family, community, friendship and change. Our PSHE, RSE and RE curriculums are closely linked, and our RSE / RE / PSHE Curriculum Map shows how these subjects support one another term by term throughout the school.
Impact
What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will have the willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere. They will have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships. They will have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. They will have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion for others.
